Steps to a proper notarization

1) Review the Document for a Notarial Certificate. To complete the notarization process, the document must include a notarial certificate. If your document is missing one, it cannot be notarized until the certificate is added.

Example notarial certificates can be found on the North Carolina Secretary of State's website for reference.

Click here to view Notary Certificates.

2) Ensure You Have Acceptable Identification. Acceptable forms of identification include:

  • State-Issued Driver's License (Temporary paper copies are not acceptable)

  • State-Issued Identification Card (Temporary paper copies are not acceptable)

  • U.S. Passport Book (Passport cards are not acceptable)

  • Military Identification Card (Must have a visible signature)

  • Credible Witness (A person who is personally known to both the signer and the notary)

    Identification can be established through:

  1. A current document issued by a federal, state, or federally or state-recognized tribal government agency that includes a photographic image of the individual’s face, along with either a signature or physical description.

  2. The oath or affirmation of a credible witness who personally knows the individual seeking notarization.

3) VERY IMPORTANT!! Do Not Sign the Document Until in the Presence of the Notary

It is important that you do not sign the document until you are in front of the notary.
